Up The Hill provides learning on the trail and in the classroom, exploring the heritage of Mātai Moana / Mt Crawford, an area of rich history and natural beauty high up on the Miramar Peninsula, Wellington New Zealand. We are currently developing a hands-on learning resource for schools, to support teachers and students to engage with our local history. We also provide tours and experiences to groups who want to get learning, up the hill.
Who we are

Hi, I'm Kate and I love maps, history and exploring outside. A trained history and social sciences teacher, I was curious about the stories in my own rohe, the beautiful Mātai Moana. The more I learned, the more I wanted to share with others. In 2023, I made a map to help people explore and find out about the Māori, military and prison history. It's been pretty popular!
I also work with schools and give tours to all sorts of people. There's plenty to explore and see so close to the capital, but a world away, up the hill.

With links to the refreshed social sciences curriculum, Up The Hill will include lesson ideas for stages 1-4, and can be used as part of a learning programme for stages 5-7 as well.
Up The Hill is a work in progress and its creator, Kate Curtis, is keen to partner with schools who would like to be involved in shaping it.
